Suburban neighbourhoods are suffering from oil and cooking gas shortages at the height of winter, Syria News reported on January 20.

Residents accuse fuel station owners of creating the shortage by artificially inflating their prices. Officials are downplaying the issue, saying it is not a crisis but a distribution problem. They say the public is hoarding fuel in anticipation that the government will end subsidies.

Separately, Syria News reported on January 23 that the government had announced an increase in the number of fuel stations. The council said it would accept bids from any company proposing to open at least 25 fuel stations. (Syria News is published by the Syrian Economic Centre.)
