Saddam Targeted Kurdish Schools

Awene is a Sulaimaniyah-based independent weekly newspaper.

Former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein had planned fifteen years ago to force schools in Sulaimaniyah and Erbil provinces to teach in Arabic rather than Kurdish, according to a Ba'ath party document obtained by Awene. It says that 43 educational experts were chosen and agreed to take part in the process, which was to start in 1989 and be completed by 1991.
